Instructions for each item in the domain registration form.

  1. PLEASE SPECIFY WHETHER THIS IS A NEW APPLICATION, A MODIFICATION TO AN EXISTING REGISTRATION, OR A DELETION

  2. THE NAME OF THE DOMAIN

This is the name that will be used in tables and lists associating the domain with the domain server addresses. It should consist of a short word which identifies the organisation registering the domain, followed by .LK.

Names should not include trademarks of other parties or words which are not permitted in business names, unless the applicant is legally entitled to use such words. Names which may mislead the public should also not be selected. Please refer to the current LK Internet Registry policy document for more information.

Names should comprise only the letters a-z, the digits 0-9 and the dash -. Names should not begin or end in a dash.

For more details refer Policy for Registration on .LK Top level

    THE LK DOMAIN NAMING STRUCTURE

The LK domain, in common with a number of other countries, places most organisations at the 2nd level, immediately to the left of the LK, irrespective of the type of organisation.  Domain names in the LK domain to not necessarily indicate the type of the organisation.

    e.g., myorg.lk

An Internet service provider or any other organisation may obtain a 2nd level domain and allocate 3rd (or higher) level domains to its sub- units, members or customers.

    e.g., org2.org1.lk

The domain gov.lk has been allocated to the Sri Lanka Government, and allocations within this domain is handled by LK Domain Registry. Government organisations should register 3rd level domains under gov.lk

    e.g., dept.gov.lk

NOTE: LK Domain Registry only handles registrations in the LK domain, If you wish to register in the COM, EDU, NET, or ORG domains, send requests to:

  3. ORGANISATION INFORMATION
    • The name of the entity represented, that is, the organisation being named.

      For example: The Networthy Corporation

Service providers submitting registrations on behalf of their customers, should give the name of the customer, not the name of the Network Service Provider or organisation submitting the request.

    • A brief description of the organisation

For example: The Networthy Corporation is a consulting organisation of people working with UNIX and the C language in an electronic networking environment.  It sponsors two technical conferences annually and distributes a bimonthly newsletter.

  4. REASON FOR SELECTING THIS DOMAIN NAME

Domain names will generally be assigned on a first-come first-served basis.  The LK domain registry is not obliged to inquire into whether a proposed domain name infringes on trademark or any other laws.

However, to guard against future disputes, applicants are requested provide the reason for selecting the domain name requested.

The following is a non-exhaustive list of common reasons for selecting domain names.

    • trademark registered in Sri Lanka

    • trademark used in Sri Lanka but not registered

    • name assigned by statute, registered company name or business name (or part or contraction thereof) (please provide the full registered name).

    • name by which the organisation is commonly known
  5. Instructions (5) TO (7)

For every registration, we need administrative, technical and billing contacts of a domain and we MUST have an e-mail address for the technical contact.  If you have a LK NIC handle (a unique database identifier ending in .LK) please enter it.  (If you don't know what a NIC handle is leave it blank).  Also the title, mailing address, phone number, organisation, and network mailbox.

  6. THE NAME OF THE ADMINISTRATIVE CONTACT

The administrator is the contact point for administrative and policy questions about the domain.  The Domain administrator should work closely with the personnel he has designated as the "technical contact" for his domain.  In this example, the Domain Administrator would be the Administrator of the Networthy Corporation, not the Administrator of the organisation running the name server (unless it is the same person).

The person in charge of computing would be more appropriate for the admin contact than the Managing Director or the Head of the Institute.

  7. THE NAME OF THE TECHNICAL CONTACT

The technical contact handles the technical aspects of maintaining the domain's name server and resolver software, and database files.  He keeps the name server running.  More than likely, this person would be the technical contact running the primary name server.  The technical contact may be at the Internet service provider.

  8. THE NAME OF THE BILLING CONTACT

The person to whom bills should be sent.  If you have not already paid the name reservation/registration fee, you will be billed for Rs. 5000.00.
    • Registration of a name space delegation.

A portion of the LK Domain name space is delegated to an organisation running name servers to support that sub-domain.

      For (a) answer questions 8 and 9.
    • Registration of Internet Hosts

One or more hosts within the allocated domain are registered in the LK domain database. This facility is commonly used to register Web servers.

      For (b) answer question 10.
    • Registration of mail forwarding.

The organisation requesting the domain is not connected to the Internet but has an e-mail gateway to the Internet.

      For (c) answer question 11.

NOTE: Organisations requesting (a) should not need (b) or (c). However, either one or both of (b) and (c) may be requested. It is possible to initially request one type or registration and later change to another.

      QUESTIONS FOR DELEGATIONS
  9. Instructions (8) to (11): PLEASE READ: There are several types of registrations:

  10. PRIMARY SERVER Information

  11. (*) SECONDARY SERVER Information

Domains must provide at least two independent servers that provide the domain service for translating names to addresses for hosts in this domain.

If you are applying for a domain and a network number assignment simultaneously and a host on your proposed network will be used as a server for the domain, you must wait until you receive your network number assignment and have given the server(s) a net-address before sending in the domain application. Please note that network numbers are generally assigned by your Internet Service Provider.

Establishing the primary and secondary servers in physically separate locations and on different networks is strongly recommended.

The servers must be up, connected to the Internet, and configured to respond to requests for the domain, before this form is submitted.

QUESTION FOR INTERNET HOSTS (If you answered 8&9 do not answer 10&11)

  12. WHAT DOMAIN NAME SYSTEM (DNS) RECORDS ARE TO BE ENTERED FOR YOUR INTERNET HOST

The host name must be within the domain specified in (2) above.  A host may have either an A record or a CNAME record.  If an A record is requested, the IP address of the host or, if a CNAME record is requested, the canonical name of the host, must be specified. (If you are unsure which type of record to use, please consult your Internet service provider.)

    Example: for INTERNET hosts

    (a)     DOMAIN NAME .....................: www.networthy.lk

    (b)     TYPE OF RECORD (A or CNAME)......: CNAME

    (c)     IP ADDRESS or CANONICAL NAME ....: host23.myisp.lk

If several hosts are to be registered in a domain, the lines in (10) may be copied and filled in as needed.

It is your responsibility to see that an IN-ADDR pointer record is entered in the DNS database. (for A records only).  Contact the administrator of the IP network your host is on to have this done.  The LK Domain administration does not administer the network and cannot make these entries in the DNS database.

    QUESTIONS FOR MAIL
  13. WHAT DOMAIN NAME SYSTEM (DNS) RECORDS ARE TO BE ENTERED FOR YOUR MAIL FORWARDING

You may enter either the domain name specified in (2), a sub domain of that domain, or all sub-domains (specified as *).

    Example:

    11a.     DOMAIN NAME ..........: myorg.lk.

    11b.*   MX ...................: 10 mailhost.myisp.lk.

More than one MX record may be specified by duplicating 11b.  If several hosts are to be registered in a domain, the lines in 11 may be copied and filled in as needed.
